Post-op Day 1

It's been 24 hours with Cason's new kidney and he's doing great. He (and we) slept fairly well last night. He woke up fussing one time, but after watching The Wiggles on my iPod for 10 or 15 minutes he was back snoozing soundly. Cason's blood work looks incredible as far as kidney values are concerned. His creatinine was 0.2 this morning (it's been hanging around 3.8 pre-transplant and supposed to stay under1) and his BUN was 7 (was around 75 and supposed to be under 20). Praise the Lord! He has been peeing like crazy, too, which is awesome!

The main thing keeping Cason in the ICU is that they are having to keep his blood pressure high to make sure that the new kidney gets enough blood. He is getting Dopamine through one of his IV lines and they are pumping him full of lots of fluid, both of which raise his blood pressure. They will continue to do this for a couple of days, then hopefully he will move to a regular floor.

Mom is doing really well, too. We walked over to see her this afternoon and she is pretty sleepy and a little sore but doing great overall. One cool new thing that they're doing here is flying a flag in front of Egleston to honor the organ donors and recipients. Cason and Nona are the first to be honored in this way. If you can't read it it says, "An organ transplant is saving the life of a child today." I guess that says it all.
Not too swollen today. He actually smiled at us twice!

That's all very awesome! He looks like such a big boy laying up there in that bed! Guessing that your mom had her surgery at Northside and they brought it over to Egleston? I know your all so relieved to be over this hurdle- hopefully this will be it!

I am so thankful that everyone is doing so well. I am so thankful that God chose Beverly to give her kidney to Cason. I know she wanted nothing more than to be the one to give this precious gift to her grandson. B.G., you have an incredible mom. Please give her a big ole hug for me.
